How’s the iSerenity?

The Kerrigans don’t have to head out to Bonnie Doon these days.  They can have their own little calm-generators with them wherever they go, if they’ve got iPhones. Zen Bound and iBonsai provide less when so many want to overly-complicate your day with more.

Ego is Not a Dirty Word

Slow month

It’s a nifty little iPhone application. Ego has a nice, clean interface that shows you all the numbers that’ll either boost your morale and encourage you to redouble your blogging & tweeting efforts, or send you into a digital existential crisis (YMMV). It’s enough to get Sesame Street’s Count von Count singing along to guys from The Lonely Island.

1! Bwahahahha

Once purchased from the App Store (v1.2 is going for AU$2.49 at the moment), you set up widgets to display your Twitter stats, website traffic and such.  Today it supports Feedburner, Google Analytics, Mint (the web stats application, not the finance service), Squarespace and Twitter. Tomorrow, who knows; the developer – Garrett Murray – invites suggestions for other services to support. I wouldn’t be surprised if more populist widgets like Facebook & MySpace friend counts, or Flickr activity, appear as options in future releases. Widget setup is accessed through the application itself, going against the trend of applications centralising their settings in the iPhone’s settings.

Just the Facts, Ma’am

Once that’s done, the app will poll the services you’ve nominated and give you the numbers one at a time. You can tap through to get to other numbers; the Twitter widget defaults to display a count of followers and your last tweet and you tap through to counts of people you’re following and updates. The Google Analytics widget defaults to a count of today’s visits; tapping through counts of visitors this week, this month and this year, all with a breakout of unique visitors in each timeslice.

Patience

Murray notes that v1.2 has had some issues with Google Analytics after Google blocked its requests for data, but that it’s all fixed in v1.3 which is pending Apple approval for release.  A bit of delayed gratification is the order of the day; no biggy.

The Triple Bottom Line

Sure, it may hurt some egos if their numbers aren’t to their liking, but it’s great for OCD SEO folk.  For everyone else I’d say Ego is a nice-to-have rather than a must-have iPhone app.

On My iPhone

‘Tis the season of giving and no doubt some lucky folk will be given, or give themselves, an iPhone this week.  I’ve had one since August and since then I’ve tried out a fair few applications, kept some, ditched some, bought Pro versions and rearranged them on the hierarchy of screens.  Get the whole story »
