I like it when eateries opt to keep menus simple and concentrate on the product. Velo Republic, a new cycle-themed cafe in Kingston, seems to have done that. Some friends and I tried them out this weekend.
I tried the Velo eggs: poached eggs with tomato relish, caramelised onions, tomato slices, swiss cheese & double-smoked brandy-cured ham. The only thing I’d change is that I’d toast the sourdough bread it’s all served on, and probably stop at one rather than two. Regardless of quantity, it’s yum.
Occupying the space on Kennedy St vacated by the funky design store Don’t Tell Phyllis, Velo Republic is on the other side of the Kingston shops from the majority of the areas cafes. If you’re not having breakfast in Kingston to see or be seen, this might be the cafe for you. It’s nice & quiet and out of the way; if they didn’t have tables & chairs out on the street you could wander right past and not notice the place (hint: a few A-frames might help walk-by traffic).
It’s not crowded, but it’s not hugely roomy either. There are plenty of cycling mags inside to flick through, but your double-suspended, mega-travel forked, ultra-light carbon fibre uber-bikes will have to be chained up outside. Prams will have to be left outside too (considering the target demo, I wonder if that’s intentional). Register ordering and payment conquers bill splitting mucking around.
Elsewhere, Our Man in Canberra reported:
Velo Republic cafe @ Kingston, fresh, door stopper-size sangers, fair coffee & soon you can browse European racing bikes out the back.
I think I’ll go back and try the rest of the menu.

Thanks for the update Dean. Good to know the rest of the menu was up to scratch. Now if only the old Santa Lucia site would give up its secrets. I know they completely gutted the space (right down to dirt level) but have no idea what’s eventually going in there.
